Our Locations
The MMM Tour.
All six locations of the Messner Mountain Museums are designed as an interconnected symbiosis. Each house represents an independent theme while remaining part of a larger context – like a satellite in dialogue with landscape, architecture and experience. The routes between the locations are part of the perception. At the centre stands MMM Firmian in Bolzano, from which routes open up into the surrounding valleys.
MMM Firmian is dedicated to the formation, ascent and erosion of mountains. MMM Juval, located in the Vinschgau, tells of the "sacred mountains". At MMM Dolomites on Monte Rite, rock climbing is the focus, in Suldens beneath the Ortler, at MMM Ortles, the theme is ice. MMM Ripa in Bruneck Castle is dedicated to mountain peoples, and MMM Corones on Kronplatz to traditional mountaineering on the great walls of the world.
The locations are spread across South Tyrol and are also connected in content. To the west, MMM Juval and MMM Ortles lead into the Vinschgau, both accessible by train, bus, car or bicycle and embedded in a dense network of hiking trails. In the Dolomites, MMM Dolomites is located on Monte Rite, accessible via Cibiana di Cadore, Zoldo or the Pustertal and Cortina d’Ampezzo. MMM Ripa is situated in Bruneck Castle in the Pustertal, and MMM Corones can be reached from Reischach, Valdaora or Rasun with the cable car or on foot.
Whether on foot, by bicycle or by car – the museums can be understood as stages of a shared route. In four to six days, a coherent path through different landscapes emerges, from the Ortler Massif to the Dolomites.
The Messner Mountain Museums are not classical art or natural history museums, but interdisciplinary places of experience. Geography, architecture, collections and themes interact and open up different perspectives on the mountain as a space of experience.
