What you see
Ice equipment, polar images, expedition objects. Images of the Ortler from two centuries. Art, technology, stories. The vast snowfields of the world. And a glacier – outside – that extends to the interior.
The MMM Ortles lies underground in Sulden at the Ortler. It is all about ice: in all its forms, myths, threats. The museum is dedicated to the White Out, the third pole, the snow lions, the darkness. And to the silent power of an element that evades and at the same time shapes everything.
The Ortles MMM is not a cold place. It is a quiet, clear, condensed space. The museum leads underground, like into a crevasse. The themes: avalanches, polar expeditions, skiing, glacier melt. The staging: minimalist, cool, compelling. The architecture enhances the experience: exposed concrete, light slit, layering. Whoever enters steps into the invisible. And leaves the familiar behind.
"The visitor literally walks into the mountain, can get an impression of ice mountains, the Arctic and Antarctic, of the force of avalanches and the effort of artists to depict ice."

Ortles is reduction. The spaces unfold slowly, the light is filtered. The contents are silent. There are no quick answers. The sense of an avalanche’s descent, the dialogue with the creaking and whispering of the glacier. And the invitation to take a step back.
Cold that doesn’t deter. Darkness that doesn’t threaten. And the feeling that ice doesn’t close in – but opens something within you.
