Dolomites: Courage. Beginning. Memory.

The MMM Dolomites is located on Monte Rite, 2,181 metres above sea level, right in the heart of the rocky landscape between Cortina and Cadore. Here, you can discover the story of the Dolomites: their spirit of exploration, first ascents, and the fascination of stone.

Important notice: the MMM Dolomites remains closed.

ROCK. HISTORY. PERSPECTIVE.

At the heart of the Dolomites stands the museum for everything related to the exploration of this world of rock: cartographers, mountaineers, climbing pioneers, scientists. Their stories form the backbone of the exhibition. And time and again: the view outwards. The museum is nestled within a former First World War fort. The architectural transformation brings old and new together—not as a contradiction, but as a dialogue. Glass extensions recall the crystal form of dolomite. Fossils bear witness to the time when a tropical sea existed here. It is about the rock: as a home, as a wonder of form, as a space of memory. And as the beginning of a story that still resonates today.

"Between the paintings, windows open up with a fantastic view of the peaks outside. Through this outlook, it is possible to bring the real mountains into the exhibition and connect them with the stories told."

Magdalena Messner

What you see

A fort that no longer protects but opens up. A gallery with paintings of the Dolomites – from Romanticism to the present day. Fossils, maps, early equipment, stories of explorers. And of course: Pelmo, Antelao, countless rock towers. Out there. Real.

What you experience

The past is not shut down here. It challenges you. The exhibition moves between documentation and interpretation, between grand gestures and quiet questions. And between the walls: light. Air. Distant view.

What you take with you

Those who look out see stone. Those who pause recognise history. And perhaps the desire grows to discover for yourself – with wonder for what was already there before you.

"The museum comprehensively presents the world of rock; the paintings featuring Dolomite motifs, the fossils and some scenes from the 'Master's' adventures are absolutely worth seeing, and the title 'Museum in the Clouds' is perfectly chosen."
